Desk Commission

A call for all artists! We require a new desk maybe you could be the one to help us out?

The Turner Gallery is asking for a new and creatively made desk. We as a collective have decided our current desk is outdated. As a gallery we find it important to keep up

Requirements:

  • 36 (h), 30(w), 72(L)
  • Mobile/wheels
  • 4+ Drawers
  • 2+ shelves
  • Front face must be covered (must not be able to see what is underneath the desk)
  • Desk must be Gallery appropriate
  • Material must be durable (be able to last + years)
  • Free standing
  • Free to use reclaim materials

We think this is a great opportunity for new artists to have their work displayed. This also gives artists and students the chance to include a professional commission application and have a sense of what it’s like to create something unique for a Gallery. Be sure to include this commission in resumés, portfolios, and any other platforms! We are reaching out to you! We are only looking for one artist to create the desk, make sure to submit proposals by March 20th. The desk itself will be due May 1st!

To submit your proposal make sure to include:

  • 2 or more sketches of your vision
  • What materials you will be using
  • How much these materials will be
  • Why you think this desk is a right fit for the Turner Gallery
  • Your name and what year you are in
  • State whether you agree to be included in Turners “Presenting Artists”

Submit your proposals to the TurnerGallery@alfred.edu email.

* Make sure they are in PDF format! *

A Tower to Climb, A Home to Find
14 ” x 17″, charcoal, watercolor, marker, ink, pencil 2019,
“This piece is inspired by a large stack of books I have sitting in my bedroom. Throughout the years I would collect flowers and save them within these book pages, almost marking a memory of that moment in time. Instead of a traditional still life, I wanted to push this study to be more creative and involve one of my passions of collecting and preserving nature.”
Una Fiesta
9″ x 12″, Ink, copic markers 2019
“I’m very proud of my Mexican heritage, and each year as I get older I fall more and more in love with who I am. One of my favorite holidays is Dia Los Muertos. I was playing with more abstract concepts with the colors used and wanted to convey a fiesta, with papel picado and bright all around me, whilst the portrait itself remains very solid concrete.”

(what i found in) Grandma’s Backyard
(L) 5.5 x (W) 5.5 x (H) 9 (inches)
ceramics
“My grandma gave me the recipe for the metallic brown oxide wash on the exterior, and between the earthy exterior and the gem-like knob on top, this is a piece that I could most definitely find buried in her backyard.”
Good Intentions
(L) 10.5 x (W) 10.5 x (H) 4.5 (inches)
ceramics
“Lyrics to an original song are scripted along the exterior of this bowl, and the words “good intentions” are highlighted in red every time they appear. The lyrics discuss how good intentions do not always result in the desired outcome and how one copes with that. The bowl itself was made with good intentions.”
De-fusion
(L) 38 x (W) 10 x (H) 9 (inches)
ceramics, mod-podge, newspaper, printer paper, pen ink
“This piece portrays the extremities of separation. One being becomes two when the lines are drawn.”
